Find out more about how we are working hard to divert market waste from landfill.
Waste Not - Diverting Market Waste
The Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Markets diverts an average of 90% of it’s waste from Hawke’s Bay Landfil.
The initiative is very much a multi-team effort between the market stallholders, customers and the Hawke’s Bay Environmental Centre.
- All Stallholders food to go and tastings are provided in compostable packaging.
- Compost and General Waste Bins are provided at 3 stations in the market, with clear labelling to help customers sort their rubbish.
- The Environment Centre Hawke's Bay's Waste Wardens are on hand to assist customers and ensure all rubbish is correctly disposed of at the bins.
- The Compostable Waste is then taken to BioRich (a commercial composting centre) to be turned into compost.
